First Daughter’s Best Friend

A Really Short story by W.D. Minton (c) 2008

First Daughter’s Best Friend Sam

Sam was hiding behind some bushes deep in the forest. It was getting dark and he hadn’t eaten since yesterday. The low, dangerous sounding voices coming from the cabin below made him shiver. It reminded him of his so called family back in the city that awful day when they kicked him out.

One of the voices was very different from the others. It was a wonderful voice that he had heard on TV many times and even in a few movies. He had caught a glimpse of her out on the highway and followed her here to this cabin. He must have looked like a dirty mess standing alone by the side of the road when he looked up and saw the old rusty van turn onto the disserted dirt road.

She pushed a curtain aside with her face just as her eyes caught his. “Could that possibly be her?” he thought to himself. “Why would she be riding in an old junk like that?” He wasn’t even sure he had seen her at all. “What in the world was she doing here anyway?” He thought, studying the cabins rundown exterior. It was a long way from Washington DC and the president’s family doesn’t vacation in this area.

“It’s probably only someone that looks like her” he thought. Since his family had abandoned him he hadn’t gotten much sleep and couldn’t be sure of anything. Still he wasn’t taking any chances so he had followed the van up the long dirt road to this cabin. But now he had heard her voice and he knew for sure it was the Presidents daughter Emma.

Light spilled suddenly out of a doorway and one of the men came out on the porch. “He sure is dressed odd like from another country” Sam thought to himself. “And what the heck is that blue hat on his head? Is there a circus in town?

Oh well,” he thought, “it could be worse I guess. Who knows how desperate these people are.” Another man came out and gave the clown man a machine gun! “A machine gun?” he thought. “Wonderful,” it just got worse.

He didn’t know much about such things but he did know the people who guard the president do not carry machine guns. Something was very wrong here and he was going to get to the bottom of it.

“They must have kidnapped her” he thought. But that doesn’t make sense because there had been nothing on the news. One of the men had a large nose and big feet. “Wow, he could stamp out forest fires with those things” Sam thought. The smaller man said something to the others and got into the ugly van and drove off.

The big man sat in a chair and propped his feet on the rail resting his weapon on his lap. He looked in Sam’s direction but didn’t notice him. Sam could see another man inside sitting in a chair. “It will be completely dark soon”, he thought. “It should be easier to sneak up on them then.”

The Presidents daughter had been in the news a lot lately because she was always getting in trouble. She would sneak off and go to movies with her friends. Most of her trouble had started after she lost her favorite pet.

He had been missing for days and when they finally found him it was too late. Last week she was caught at a mall with a boy and this made her dad really angry. He said she wasn’t old enough to date and it was dangerous for her to go places.

The man inside the cabin stood up and walked over to Emma. He said something to her and then he pulled her hair. She yelled at him and then he punched her in the face. That was enough for Sam. He was going to tear this clown limb from limb.

Sam snuck into the cabin through a rear door when the man outside wasn’t looking. Inside the cabin was dark on the side where Emma was tied in a chair. There was a bar and a sofa along one wall. Sam waited until the dude with the strange hat closed his eyes, then he moved behind the sofa.

The man moved and made a noise and pulled a paper towel from his pocket and blew his nose. “That’s a really mean looking guy” Sam thought. Emma saw Sam right away but didn’t say anything. She just followed him with her eyes questioning as if to say. “What are you doing here?” When he got closer she whispered “Get out of here, these guys will kill you!”

Sam ignored her and advanced silently, little more than a shadow along the wall. Suddenly the man with the blue hat walked over and hit Emma across the mouth. “I told you to keep your stupid mouth shut bitch” Said the bozo. This made Sam madder than ever but he couldn’t do anything yet.

Remaining motionless in the shadows Sam waited until the man turned his back and went back to his chair. He then resumed his approach to Emma’s chair. Her eyes got big in amazement as she watched Sam crawl behind her chair in his brave attempt to rescue her.

The chair was one of those old wooden slat things with straw formed into a seat. “I always liked these chairs” he thought. Once behind Emma’s chair he could see she was held with some kind of tape. He couldn’t cut the tape so he pulled at it for what seemed like forever until she could pull her hands free.

“Now what” he thought. “Guess I should have planed a little more. Think I’ll check and see what the man is doing.” He looked around the chair and the bozo was still sleeping. Sam could see that the man had a cell phone on the table beside him.

The only problem was the bozo had his hand on the darn thing. “If Emma had this thing she could call for help” he thought. He was an expert at sneaking because it had been part of his job at his previous home. She saw what he was doing and said “oh careful, don’t wake him”.

Emma watched in amazement as Sam skillfully pulled the phone from under his hand and brought it to her. She immediately dialed a number and whispered something to someone. She left the phone on and placed it into her pocket.

Just then the other bozo entered the cabin and saw Emma standing. He pulled a gun and aimed it at her. Sam’s reflexes took over and he flew across the room like a streak of lightning and tore the kidnappers face into a bloody mess.

The man screamed and dropped his weapon to the floor. Blood spattered all over the man in the chair who fell to the floor. Emma was right behind Sam and kicked the man on the floor in the head. He fell backwards with a crash.

Emma and Sam ran out the door into the dark woods.

Bullets flew all around them as they climbed through a steep wooded area. Thank God there were lots of big boulders around to help protect Emma from all those bullets.

“How could there be so many” he thought. Sam felt something hit his leg and it hurt like fire but they kept running and running. After a while he could hear helicopters and dogs everywhere.

Sam didn’t know what happened to Emma. He looked everywhere but she had disappeared into the night. His leg hurt a lot and he needed to rest.

The sound of machine guns rang out in the distance. There was a huge explosion from the direction of the cabin. He hoped Emma got away. It sounded like the whole world was after them. He lay down in a ditch. “gotta rest” he thought.

He wasn’t sure where he was. “Someplace near the lake” he thought. It was hard to make out anything in the inky blackness. After what seemed like hours he got up and slowly limped to the nearest road.

Suddenly there were police cars coming down the highway and lots of men walking with flashlights. One of them shined a light into the woods and into Sam’s eyes. “I think we found him!” The man said into a radio. Car doors slammed and Emma jumped out. She ran to him yelling “there he is! Oh God, he’s hurt, get him into the car and get him to a doctor.”

The next day Sam was feeling much better with plenty of food and lot’s of attention from Emma and her parents. There was a bandage on his leg where the bullet had struck him and it still hurt plenty but he didn’t care much. Emma was safe and that’s all he cared about.

Reporters and photographers filled a large room at the White House. One interesting thing was the presence of Sam’s old family. Why would the family that had abandoned him have an interest in him now?

Some of the questions the reporters were asking were kind of strange. Sometimes it seemed like they didn’t quite believe Emma but she was nice to all of them and answered as best as she could because that’s the kind of person she was.

Sam on the other hand couldn’t answer them at all. He didn’t care much though. He was happily curled up on Emma’s lap. He was home.
